Is Batumi worth visiting? Pros and cons
Updated 5 November 2026
Batumi is worth it for a 7 km seafront, low prices and a warm summer sea, but not for sand or dry weather: rain falls on about 139 days a year. It gets about 2,500 mm of rain, its beach is pebbles, and its centre comes with towers, traffic and casinos. Facts are as of November 2026.

Rain: the biggest catch
The Batumi airport station records about 2,500 mm a year, on about 139 days with at least 1 mm (WMO normals 1981–2010). September to November bring over 300 mm a month, often in heavy downpours, and even July has about ten rainy days. April and May are driest, at about 90 mm, but the sea is then only 11–16 °C. See weather by month.
Beach and sea: pebbles, and an open question on the water
The city beach is grey pebbles for all 7 km, free, and the seabed drops off within a few metres, so bring water shoes. The nearest sand is at Ureki, 50 km north (the beaches).
On cleanliness there is no simple answer. Since 2019 Batumi's sewage has gone to a central treatment plant instead of the open sea (EU Neighbours East). In July 2026 the National Environmental Agency said monthly monitoring at 14 points on Georgia's coast was within limits, but the report we read (Georgia Today) names no beaches and lists metals, petroleum and other chemical and hydrobiological indicators, with no bacteria counts. We found no published beach-by-beach bathing results, and no Georgian beach has a Blue Flag, as Georgia is not in the programme.
Against that, an engineer quoted by DFWatch in September 2025 said storm drains wash street rubbish into the sea and warned of summer disease outbreaks, without figures, and the Howtrip author (August 2026) lived there over a year and never risked a swim. Avoid the port and the day after heavy rain, and go to Gonio, Kvariati or Sarpi for clearer water.
Towers and construction
RFE/RL counted 8,317 building permits in Adjara over the decade to 2022, and it has not stopped. Sales listings in 2026 still show new towers of 20 floors and more due in 2028 (Korter). Before booking a flat in a new tower, ask what is being built next door.
Traffic and taxis
This is the real risk. Georgia recorded 469 road deaths in 2025, 164 of them pedestrians: 129 per million people against 44 in the EU (Interior Ministry data, JAMnews). That is national; we found no Batumi figure. People quoted by DFWatch describe constant jams in Batumi and cars parked in several rows. A Tonkosti reader (2024) says cars often do not stop at unregulated crossings, while Howtrip says pedestrians are let through everywhere, so cross with care. Taxis are easy: Bolt shows the fare first, 5–10 ₾ across the centre; agree a street taxi's price in lari before you get in.
Prices
Batumi is cheap by European standards. A week for two without housing is about 1,000 ₾ on a budget or 2,000–2,300 ₾ with restaurants every day. Restaurant prices rose 7.6 % in the year to May 2026 (Geostat, Georgia Today), and the Boulevard adds about a third. See prices in Batumi.
Casinos, language and safety
Casinos. iGaming Business counted 11 in October 2022, mostly in large hotels (Madloba), so they are easy to skip. Foreigners may enter from 18 with a passport, Georgians from 25.
Language. In a 2019 nationwide survey (CRRC), 58 % of adults had no basic English and about 10 % no basic Russian. A Tonkosti reader found Russian worked with older people and English with younger ones.
Safety. The UK government says crime levels are low and advises against travel only to Abkhazia, South Ossetia and the areas next to them (updated 15 September 2026). Numbeo's perception score for Batumi is 80 out of 100, from 68 contributors. Wander-Lush mentions child pickpockets in a few spots in Tbilisi and Batumi.
What travellers say
These are self-selected opinions, not a survey.
- Tonkosti: 116 reviews, average 5.3, the latest on 23 October 2026 with a 3. The newest repeat inflated prices, slow service, pebbles and few toilets, and praise the Old Town and car trips.
- Indie Traveller: Marek Bron called his two and a half days in July "a bit of a waste of time", though he liked the skyline at sunset.
- Claire's Footsteps (March 2024): a rainy January visit, and still worth it for the food, history and mountains.
- T—Zh (July 2024): 14 reader reviews range from very clean beaches to dirt and smell; one found black mould in a flat.
Who should go, who should not
Go if you:
- want a seafront city with cheap food and do not mind pebbles or showers;
- can come from June to October for the sea, or in winter for a quiet, cheap long stay;
- want a base for day trips to Gonio, Mtirala and Makhuntseti.
Do not go if you:
- want sand and shallow water at the door, as with toddlers;
- need a guaranteed dry week;
- want a low-rise historic town with no cranes;
- want all-inclusive hotels, of which there are few (Make-Trip, June 2026).
Our studios, honestly
Our two studios are on the 33rd floor of Blue Sky Tower, a 2025 complex across the street from Black Sea Mall, seven minutes on foot from the beach. They are not first line: the sea is on the horizon, and the sun sets towards Gonio, so you see a pink sky rather than a sunset over the water. Some neighbours are still finishing their flats, though it is rarely audible up here, and the complex's pools, sauna and spa are not due until about summer 2027. You book directly with us on this site: see the studios.

Questions and answers
Is Batumi worth visiting?
Yes, if you want a seafront city with cheap food and accept pebbles, about 139 rainy days a year and a skyline of towers. No, if you want a sandy beach or a guaranteed dry week.
What are the downsides of Batumi?
Rain, pebbles, traffic and risky roads, high-rise construction, and summer rents two to three times the low-season price.
Is Batumi safe for tourists?
Crime is not the main concern: the UK government says crime levels are low. The main risk is the road, so cross with care.
Is the sea in Batumi clean?
State monitoring was within limits in July 2026, and sewage has gone to a treatment plant since 2019, but we found no beach-by-beach bathing results. Avoid the port and the day after heavy rain.
Do people speak English or Russian in Batumi?
Russian is more common among older people and English among younger ones. Nationwide in 2019, 58 % of adults had no basic English and about 10 % no basic Russian.
